Kainos Community Programmes for Offenders

About

ABOUT

CHALLENGE TO CHANGE was a UK faith-based prison programme that ran in ten English prisons from around 1997 to 2024, using professionally trained staff. It was managed by three different UK-based charities, Kairos for the first two years, the Kainos Community from 1999 to 2013 and the Langley Trust from 2014 to 2023. In 2024 it  was axed as part of HM Prison Service economies in favour of their own programme THINKING FIRST.

It has been shown to work for medium to high risk adult male offenders but could well be modified for female offenders or for younger offenders. A modified programme PATHWAYS TO CHANGE was run as a pilot in an English Probation Hostel from 2017 to 2019 and although shown to work for adult male ex-offenders, funding was not available to main stream the programme.

This web site has been created to record the details of these programmes and research on their effectiveness. It also aims to act as a resource for any future organisations who might wish to set up similar programmes in the future. It is based upon evidence from many international programmes and was fully accredited by the UK Correctional Services Accreditation and Advice Panel in 2009 and 2016.
